What Highlights Are and How They Work
Traditional highlights — sometimes called foil highlights — involve isolating sections of hair and applying lightener or color within foil packets, which creates a controlled environment for processing. The result is a consistent, even lightening effect from root to tip within each section.
Because foil highlights are precise and predictable, they’re great for clients who want dramatic contrast, full coverage of grays, or a very specific color result. They tend to look polished and defined rather than natural or sun-kissed. The tradeoff is that regrowth is more visible over time, which means more frequent touch-up appointments — typically every six to eight weeks.
What Balayage Is and How It Differs
Balayage is a freehand painting technique where the colorist applies lightener directly to the surface of the hair without foils, sweeping color from mid-shaft to the ends and concentrating it where the sun would naturally hit. The result is softer, more blended, and more dimensional than traditional foil highlights.
The growth pattern is also different. Because balayage doesn’t start at the root, there’s no sharp regrowth line — color fades gradually, which means you can typically go three to five months between appointments without looking like you’re overdue. This makes it a popular choice for clients with busy schedules or those who prefer a lower-maintenance routine.
Which One Is Right for Fall?
Fall is the most popular season for both techniques, and the choice often comes down to personal preference and lifestyle rather than one being objectively better than the other.
Go with Balayage if:
- You want rich, warm tones like caramel, chestnut, or copper for fall.
- You like a lot of dimension concentrated through the mid-shaft and ends.
- You prefer a less structured look that transitions naturally into cooler weather and works well with textured, effortless styling.
Go with Foil Highlights if:
- You prefer bright, uniform lightness from root to tip.
- You are trying to lighten significantly from your base color and need faster results.
- You want root-to-tip coverage or are blending a significant amount of gray hair.
